ABOUT
The ambition of this project is to improve the availability of affordable housing on Squamish Nation reserve lands and aims to foster intergenerational relationships and presents a unique opportunity to reimagine the traditional Squamish longhouse living practice of shared accommodation and seeks to create a grounded living context of mutual support and learning opportunities.
This project features 95 units of residential space, ranging from studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom units in the four storey apartment building and 3-5 bedroom towhouses suited for families and multigenerational living. The majority of the one and two bedroom units are either accessible or adaptable to be converted to accessible units in the future. The form of both the apartment and townhouses are straightforward and contemporary, deriving from the siting principles of neighbourliness and planning efficiency. The character and design of the buildings present a modern approach toSquamish culture, utilizing Squamish motifs in screens and feature exterior artwork designed by local artists, to be a proud representation of a modern Squamish future grounded in respect for the past. These elements will be visible from public roads outside the reserve.
Cladding detailing will be reminiscent of Coast Salish longhouse cladding using horizontal Cementous siding in a staggered pattern. The townhouses are articulated by projected bays in bold colours from Squamish identity palette.
A co-op grocery store is part of the project and will be an opportunity for residents and the larger community to sell traditional and artisanal food, gathered and hunted food (berries, salmon, game), and purchase coffee, tea, and baked goods. The space will be a community hub for workshops, poetry readings, gatherings, and other community events.
