ABOUT

This project is master plan, functional programming and concept design for the new Indigenous Legal Lodge at the University of Victoria. The 22,000 sq ft expansion and 4,000 sq ft renovation to the existing building will house the new Juris Indigenous Degree (JID) - the first law degree in Canada that is founded on Indigenous Law.

UAA has been working closely with the faculty, staff and students to create the vision, establish the functional program. We are about to start the concept design stage.

The vision for the building is based on guiding principles that grow from the roots of the program and are filtered through the concept of "living the good life - Indigenous Law as a Living Practise". The spaces and places of the building are conceived to support a way of learning that has been passed down from the Elders. This project will balance local with global considerations - honouring the environment and connecting Indigenous legal practises across the world.
