Cathryn John | Intern Architect, MRAIC

CATHRYN JOHN

Cathryn joins the UAA team as an Intern Architect. She is an award-winning industrial designer and nationally recognized illustrator. Her experience in the creative industry is varied which allows her to tackle projects from a holistic perspective.  As an Illustrator, Cathryn specialized in children’s books, visual recordings, and information graphics.

She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design from Emily Carr University of Art & Design. At ECUAD her minor studies included: Social Practices and Community Engagement, where she learned the value of deep listening and a human-centered approach to design. Her capstone project won an international design award and was selected to be showcased at events such as the Vancouver Why I Design Event and the PNE.

In her Master studies she researched alongside and worked with local nations in Calgary Alberta, to respectfully consider Indigenous ways of seeing, knowing and being in environmental design education. This culminated in a published paper and presentation at the international EAAE-ARCC Conference in May 2024.

Cathryn is deeply grateful to the Musqueam/xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Squamish/Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Tsleil-Waututh/Sel̓íl̓witulh Nations whose traditional, ancestral and unceded lands are where she has the honour to live, work and learn.
